During our search for bioactive compounds from fungi, the terrestrial Penicilliumsp.KH Link 1809 isolate KHMM was fermented on large scale using solid rice medium. After harvesting, working up and purification of the afforded extract using different chromatographic techniques, the bioactive metabolites viridicatol (1) and kojic acid (2) were isolated. The chemical structures of 1 and 2 were confirmed by extensive 1D and 2D NMR and mass measurements, and by comparison with literature data. The antimicrobial activity of the strain extract was studied using a panel of pathogenic microorganisms.
